In 2018, the regional reviews of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), 25 years after Cairo, provided an opportunity for Tunisia to renew its commitments to the Cairo Plan of Action. Tunisia has also shown, both at the regional conference in ACCRA and in Beirut its adherence to the 2013 Cairo and Addis Ababa declarations on ICPD + 20.

The UNFPA office in Tunisia, brought together the Tunisian delegation made up of MDICI members, the National Office of Family and Population, the Ministry of Social Affairs and members of civil society organizations, before the Beirut Conference in October 2018. The objective was to define a consensual position of Tunisia regarding the follow-up of the 2013 Cairo Declaration in population and development.

Tunisia's messages were strong and progressive and allowed to:

  • Highlight Tunisia's achievements, 5 years after the 2013 Cairo declaration
  • Emphasize the links between the ICPD and the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Demonstrate the importance of enjoying sexual and reproductive rights and gender equity in achieving the sustainable development goals.

Population projections at the
local level

In 2018, the National Institute of Statistics developed demographic projections at the local level (by administrative delegation) with the support of UNFPA Tunisia CO.

The main objective of these projections is to provide an estimate of the size and future age structure of the Tunisian population. The results will be made available to regions and local authorities and serve as a common framework for informing policy makers and planners in different areas of development at the local level. This will help putting in place appropriate measures to meet the needs and expectations of the local population.

These projections complement the population projections developed in 2015 at the national level from the results of the 2014 population and housing census. The development of local population projections supports Tunisia's national authorities to take into account priorities and needs within national development plan 2016-2020, particularly in terms of decentralization and strengthening of local governance.

Indeed, the local demographic projections allows to:

  • Strengthen the foundations of local democracy and support local governance in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution
  • Promote the participation of citizens in the development and monitoring of the implementation of development poli cies and programs at regional and local levels
  • Improve the management of local and regional affairs through the restructuring of the administrative and institutio nal system, the modernization of means of action and the improvement of services.
